Aspen Ridge Kennels

Our philosophy is simple;

  • To breed only sound, natural hunting dogs of the highest quality and standards.

We have been very fortunate to have acquired dogs that we feel not only meet, but exceed the standards of the breed. It is because of the love for these dogs and the breed. That we not only have the ability to help improve this wonderful breed, but feel we have a responsibility to do so.

Without Lonn Kuck owner of Elk Run Kennels, the time and diligence he has put in importing and producing high quality versatile hunting dogs, our companions would not be here today, and neither would other United States Breeders companions. It takes a great deal of time and resource's to produce quality hunting dogs. It is one thing to acquire and breed dogs just to get more "Braque's" on the ground. It is another thing to improve the breed, to take the time and effort to see what each dog posses, not that they simply just meet the standards of the Braque du Bourbonnais, but meet and exceed the standards of an avid upland bird hunter prior to them being bred.

Although the Bourbonnais is a medium size pointer, hip dysplasia is an issue, this is why we utilize the PennHip program, it measures the laxity or tightness of hips in dogs. The premise is that the tighter the hips the lower the probability of dysplasia. Mike and I fell that it is Extremely important that every dog in our breeding program be Pennhip tested. Without the knowledge that this test gives us, we could not start to help improve the Braque du Bourbonnais.

Our litters will only take place when the following criteria have been met;

  • Good nose
  • Desire
  • Natural hunting ability
  • Locks up on first scent
  • Must prove their desire to hunt "wild" birds
  • They must be biddable and have the temperament to be a welcome addition to the family.
  • PennHip tested
  • Passed a NAVHDA Natural ability test (if birth date allows)

We will not breed our companion's so that the litter will interfere with our bird season. As we don't want to have a litter that we cannot keep our eyes on, we want to be there for both the Dam and her puppies.

We feel that it is equally important to provide references (upon request) not only for our previous litters, but for both Sire and Dam of the up coming litters. The references for our Sires and Dam will consist of; "Hunters" either that have hunted with their dogs and ours or hunted just behind our dogs: "NAVHDA Members" that have helped us in training sessions or have just observed our dogs in the field; "NSTRA Members" these people we have run against in the braces at different NSTRA events.  Every person can answer questions about our dogs temperament, desire and abilities.
